Now that Super Bowl XLI is over there is always a discussion if the winning coach is among the great coaches of the game. No offense to Tony Dungy,or any other coach who has at least 1 Super Bowl win. The Sports Den decided to come up with a list of who we think are the 10 greatest coaches. Most of them will be obvious choices. Its just The Sportd Den’s opinion that winning one Super Bowl makes you one of the best .
1. Vince Lombardi – The Super Bowl Trophy is named after him. He won 7 NFL Titles as a coach. 5 NFL Championship Games and 2 Super Bowls.
2. George Halas – Coached the Chicago Bears for 40 years, won 6 NFL titles.
3. Don Shula – Coached in 6 Super Bowls, coached the ’72 Dolphins to a 17-0 record. Winningest coach in NFL history.
4.Paul Brown – Organized the Cleveland Browns in the old ALl-American Football Conference in 1946. Won 4 AAFC titles and 3 NFL titles.
5. Curly Lambeau – Founded the Packers in 1919. Coached the Packers to 6 NFL titles.
6. Chuck Knoll – Coached the Pittsburgh Steelers to 4 Super Bowl Victories in six year span.
7. Tom Landry – Coached the Cowboys in 5 Super Bowls, 20 consecutive winning seasons. Ranks third all-time in wins as a coach.
8.Joe Gibbs – Coached the Washington Redskins to 3 Super Bowl titles. Still coaching and could move up on the list.
9. Bill Belichick – Coached the New England Patriots to 3 Super Bowl Title in 5 years. Still coaching and could move up on the list.
10. Bill Walsh – Designed the West Coast Offense that is now used in different versions by a lot of teams in the NFL. Coached the San Fransisco 49ers to 3 Super Bowl Titles.
The Sports Den may have missed a few but this is a pretty impressive list of coaches. Its doubtful, with the exception of Belichick and Gibbs, that any of today’s coaches will crack the top 5 of this list.
