The Phillies pulled off what is a rarity in baseball, a four game sweep of the New York Mets. In the process the Phils cut the Mets lead in the NL East down to 2 games, not bad considering the fact that five days ago they trailed by 7 games. The series did have a playoff atmosphere to it, especially Thursday’s game with the Phils going for the sweep and the Mets trying to avoid being swept. The Phils bullpen did make it harder than what you wanted it to be. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead on home runs by Ryan Howard, Pat (The Met Killer) Burrell, and Aaron Rowand, the bullpen would let the Mets tie the game at 5-5. Then the Phillies took the lead back at 8-5 only to see the Mets go back on top 10-5. It was great to see Pat Burrell extract some revenge on Mets closer Billy Wagner by hitting his second home run off him to bring the Phillies to within one at 10-9. I guess Wagner’s comments pissed Burrell off a little. It was even better to see Wagner blow the save in the nineth and then blow the game by giving up the game winning hi to NL MVP candidate Chase Utley. Thursday’s game had to be one of the best Phillies games in recent memeory, lets just hope they can keep it up and not go on a prolonged losing streak. This weekend the Mets take on the Braves so I guess I’ll have to be a Braves fan temporarily. Hmm…going into the last month of the season only 2 games out….interesting.
