The Sports Den is going to throw their two cents into the long running argument as to why the NCAA needs to come up with a playoff in football. On Thursday night Rutgers upset #2 South Florida, now there are a lot of experts and pundits out there saying see South Florida didn’t deserve to be ranked #2 because of 2 reasons, 1 they just weren’t good enough, and 2 they didn’t play anybody. If you are going to use the argument that some teams don’t deserve their ranking because they didn’t play anybody then why is Ohio St. ranked #1 when they haven’t played a team yet that was ranked in the top 25 when they played them? Here is a list of teams Ohio St. has played so far, not one of them is or has been a ranked team.
Sep 1
Youngstown State
Won 38-6
Sep 8
Akron
Won 20-2
Sep 15
@Washington

Sep 22
Northwestern

Sep 29
@Minnesota

Oct 6
@Purdue

Oct 13
Kent St.

Now if your BCS ranking is based in part on your strenght of schedule, this sure looks like a weak schedule so far. Could it be that in some cases the name of the school means more than the strenght of schedule. There is a good chance that come bowl time all of the teams ranked in the BCS will have at least one loss. Now wouldn’t it be better to put them in a playoff to find out who is the best team than trying to guess? Is amazing that LSU is ranked higher than Kentucky especially since LSU lost to Kentucky, anyone else see a problem with that?
