my Rollins made another prediction a few weeks ago saying the Phillies would win 100 games in 2008. Not that our opinion means much but The Sports Den says don’t count on it! One of the major reasons we say that is that it looks like the Phillies are not going to re-sign CF Aaron Rowand. The Sports Den calls that a major mistake. Rowand had a career year at the plate and in the field, winning a Gold Glove, and his reward for that, we won’t be able to afford to pay you. the way Rowand plays baseball is exactly what the Phillies need. The problem is that Phillies GM Pat Gillick doesn’t like to sign players to 5 year deals. Its good to know that the GM’s personal preferences are more important than whats good for the team. Not signing Rowand is going to come back and haunt the Phillies.
Another reason The Sports Den says don’t count on the Phillies winning 100 games is the fact that the Phillies are their notorious slow starts. Take a look at their record in the months of April and May, if you don’t play better in those months how are you going to win 100 games. Does Rollins’ prediction mean the Phillies are going to play better in April and May? Their track record says no. Then again this all depends on what happens during the rest of the off season.
