Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling has a shoulder problem. Now depending on who you listen to the team physicians, who have Schilling on a program of cortisone shots and rehab, or Schilling’s doctor who says his tendon is torn and needs surgery. The Red Sox say there is no need for a third opinion. What makes this ironic is the George Mitchell, who sits on the Board of Directors of the Red Sox, released his report on the use of steroids in baseball. Yes Curt Schilling has a medical condition, but what is the difference between what he and the Red Sox are doing compared to what let’s say Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds are being accused of? Cortisone is a steroid, maybe not the same as annobolic steroids, but a steroid none the less, and isn’t this being used to enhance his performance since he won’t be able to pitch without it? Schilling has been one of the biggest critics of the use of steroids in baseball. Team phisicians aren’t always right, need proof?, last season Phillies team phyiscians said Freddie Garcia was alright to pitch, then was sidelined due to a shoulder injury that just about everyone in baseball knew he had. No, The Sports Den dosen’t think steroids should be allowed in baseball, but if your going to ban them when the players use them fo rtheir own greedy self interest, then you should ban them when the teams use them for their own greedy self interests. Medical condition or not. The Sports Den is probably making a bigger issue of this than needs be, but it is something to think about. If its not ok for one, then why is it ok for the other?
