Some times the best moves GM’s make have nothing to do with players, in the Phillies case the biggest move that they made to help them win the World Series in 2008 came at the end of the 2006 season and it had nothing to do with the players since most of the 2008 team were already here. It had to do with a change in the coaching staff, especially replacing then bench coach Gary Varsho with Jimy Williams. In this day and age of big name free-agents, every contender thinks they need one, they don’t always work, ask the Cubs and Angels, and Dodgers, sometimes it comes down to a small move that nobody really pays attention to, like a change in the coaching staff. If you don’t think thats true just take a look at what happened to the Phillies since that move took place in 2006. In 2007 the Phillies made the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. We all know what happened in 2008, is it just coincidence, I don’t think so.I think it even made Charlie Manuel a better manager, if your old enough to remember the Phillies of the late 70’s then you know what Bobby Wine did for Danny Ozark. That is why bringing in Jimy Williams was the best move the Phillies made.Unfortunately Jimy Williams has decided not to return to the Phillies next season, hopefully he changes his mind, you were a big part of ending the championship drought here in Philly and for that, THANKS! and GOO LUCK.
