Here’s a little flashback in Phillies history. If your not old enough to remember what happened on Feb. 25, 1972 here is a little flashback. On this date in 1972 the Phillies pulled off what is considered now one of the biggest steals in baseball history when the sent Rick Wise to the St. Louis Cardinals for Steve Carlton. What makes this story amazing is what caused the trade in the first place. What caused the trade was that Steve Carlton asked for a salary of $65,000.00, yeah chump change campared to today’s salaries, and the Phillies offered to send Wise to the Cardinals. Whats even funnier is Wise signed a 1 year $65,000 contract with the Cardinals, and Carlton signed a 1 year $65,000 contract with the Phillies, and in 1972 went 27-10, 1.97 ERA, and had 310 K’s and won the first of his four Cy Young Awards.
