The Detroit Tigers have released Gary Sheffield, the Phillies have released Geoff Jenkins, and ESPN’s Buster Olney is reporting that Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro has said the Phillies are interested in Sheffield as a part time outfielder, my guess is to split time with Raul Ibanez. Yeah Sheffield has 499 career home runs, but by reports on Sheffield, his fielding abilities have diminished, he is 40 years old. If the Phillies do sign him it would mean that they replaced a 32 year old outfielder, Pat Burrell, with a 36 year old, Raul Ibanez, and 40 year old Sheffield, doesn’t make much sense does it. This is one reason I personally don’t trust Ruben Amaro, it looks more like a personal move by Amaro to let Burrell go than a financial one, since when Burrell came up to the Phillies it basically ended Amaro’s playing days, he was traded to the Giants that year and was released during spring training and officiall was out of baseball, this is just my personal opinion on it, and thats all it is, just an opinion.
