Firts off The Sports Den has no problem with the Roy Halladay deal. Love the fact the he will now be the ace of the Phillies staff. Yes it would have been great to have both him and Cliff Lee in the starting rotation, any team would love to have that combo. This is where the problem comes in with the Phillies trading Lee away. The Phillies are not the Yankees so there wouldn’t have been anyway to sign both Halladay and Lee to long term deals, right now I wish the Steinbrenner’s owned the Phillies, but they didn’t have to. The Phillies did give up 7 propects in both the Lee deal in 2008, and for Roy Holiday, but that didn’t mean you had to trade Lee away just to “replenish” your farm system, not now anyway. Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro Jr, in the press conference for Halladay said they could have kept both, (which means if you take him at his word, money wasn’t the issue, gets the owners off the hook), well why the hell didn’t they? Amaro also said it was a baseball decision, a bad one, how can you justify giving up the chance of increasing your chances of winning the World Series in 2010, for the sake of your farm system. The players the Phillies received probably won’t be ready for the majors for at least another 3-4 years if they make it at all, probably not with the Philles, so was trading Lee really worth it, no. Now don’t get this wrong The Sports Den hopes for Amaro’s sake the Phillies do win the World Series in 2010 with Roy Halladay, if not the question becomes would they have if they kept Cliff Lee.
