The NFL owners are scheduled to vote on a proposal to change the rules in OT in playoff games. The proposal suggests that if the team that wins the coin toss should kick a field goal the opposing team should be given the opportunity to try and do the same, if successfull, OT would then continue under the current rules.
The NFL Competiton Committee say statistics show that the numbers have changed. It says from ’74 to ’93 it was a 50-50 split but the numbers have changed and 59.8% of the teams winning the toss go on to win the game, while 38.5% of the teams that lose the toss win the game. The owners should leave it alone, don’t change the rules. Why should a team who wins the toss drive the field and kick a field goal be punished, while the teams defense that couldn’t stop them be rewarded with a chance to tie the game again? This isn’t college football. Let the defense do their job and stop them, if they can’t then game over.If they really feel the need to change the rules, then make it that you can’t win a playoff game in OT on a field goal, you have to score a touchdown.
