Kyle Kendrick went 8 innings giving up just four hits and 0 runs, repeat 0 runs. Unfortunately for him due to the current belief by some pitching coaches, and managers that pitch counts mean anything, Kendrick was not allowed to finish a game he should have had the opportunity to finish having thrown 108 pitches. Instead, the Phillies bullpen grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory, and lose to the Braves 4-3. With two outs in the nineth temporary closer Ryan Madson suffered a meltdown and gave up three runs on 18 pitches, sending the game to extra innings. Enter Jose Contraras, who gave up the game winning home run to the Braves Nate McClouth. Maybe the next time a Phillies pitcher has 4 hit shut out going, the coaches and manager won’t be in such a hurry to bring in the bullpen no matter what the pitch count.
