The Sports Den was a little bored, so we actually read an article on NHL.com about their Board of Governors meeting, its the same as any other sport, the big shots sit around a couple of days in winter, in a warm state, discussing the state of their game. One of the dicussions was about the fact that the NHL’s contracts with Versus, and NBC are about to expire.
Discussion about the expiring television deals in the United States also was a prime subject of conversation.
The current deals with both Versus, the League’s cable partner, and NBC, the League’s national network, expire after this season.
According to Bettman, the League is currently in an exclusive negotiating window with Versus, to be followed by a similar window for NBC. After those negotiations, other suitors could enter into the process.
It is a situation that appeals to many in the League because television numbers are on the rise in many local markets and both Versus and NBC have enjoyed successes during the life of the current deals
Now this should be interesting how thos enegotiations work out. Considering the fact that the NHL has had problems through the years with T.V. contracts. It looks like Comcast will be a big winner hear, seeing how they own Versus, and are about to own NBC, did The Sports Den mention that Comcast also owns the Philadelphia Flyers? The way this is going it looks as though in the U.S. that Comcast will be the only place to see hockey, if you get it.
