After a rain out on Friday night the Phillies and Rays finally got the series started on Saturday afternoon. It started off with the Rays taking a 3-0 lead, then the Phillies fought back to take a 5-3 lead thanks to a Juan Pierre 3 run homer. The Phillies would eventually take a 6-4 lead into the ninth with Jonathan Papelbon in to seal the deal right? Wrong, after 18 straights save Papelbon blew his first save of the season, and the Rays and Phillies would head into the bottom of the ninth tied 6-6. Now how is this for drama, Jim Thome comes to the plate to pinch hit for Papelbon, and Thome didn’t disappoint. Thome crushed a pitch to left field to give the Phillies a 7-6 win, and became MLB’s all-time leader in walk off homers with 13. The Phillies improve to 34-38, and move into fourth place in the NLEast, ahead of the Marlins who take over last place for now. The Rays drop to 38-32 with the loss.
