In case you were wondering how the Phillies and Dodgers could make a trade after the so called July 31 trade deadline, this is how it’s done. Most players are pu ton waivers after July 31 where a) they can be claimed by another team as in Joe Blanton’s case, and a deal is made, b) they clear waivers and then can be traded top any team, c) they are claimed by another team but that has the player can then either make a deal or pull the player back from waivers in Cliff Lee’s case. So Joe Blanton is now a Dodger and the Phillies may get a player in return or cash which is a good thing since Blanton would become a free agent, and the Phillies would get nothing in return, and Cliff Lee stays which is a good thing.
