There was a blockbuster trade in MLB on Saturday. The Los Angels Dodgers have acquired Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, and Nick Punto from the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox get in return 1B James Loney, P Rubby DeLa Rosa, and prospects P Allen Webster, INF. Ivan DeJesus, and OF Jerry Sands. the Dodgers will have to wait until next season for Crawford since he had Tommy John surgery, and is done for the season, Gonzalez, Beckett, and Punto should help the Dodgers push for the playoffs. The trade allows the Red Sox to dump about $270 million in salary.
Now if your a casual baseball fan and your scratching your head thinking how can they make a trade past the July 31 trade deadline here is some help. There is no such thing as a trade deadline in baseball. Here are what the dates mean if you didn’t know:
July 31st Deadline– Up until July 31st players can be traded without haveing to clear waivers, after July 31st most players are put on waivers where they can be claimed by another team, as in the case of this trade, Gonzalez was put on waivers and claimed by the Dodgers. The Red Sox had roughly 72 hours to work out a deal or pull him back off waivers, since both team talked about a trade earlier, before the 31st, they made a deal.
August 31st Deadline – Trades made on or before this date, the players involved are eligible for the post season roster. After this date players involved will not be eligible for the post season. Hope this helped.
