The Phillies and Cardinals opened up their four game series with something you don’t see much anymore, a classic pitching duel. Both starting pitchers went into the ninth inning. Adam Wainwright (9 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 2 HR, 0-3) pitched well but made two mistakes to Rhys Hoskins. Hoskins (8) took over the ML lead with a pair of solo home runs one in the seventh, and one in the ninth that gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Zach Wheeler (8+ IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K, 2-2) picked up the win. After the Cardinals cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth Nolan Aranado almost gave the Cardinals a 3-2 win, but his fly ball fell just short of reaching the seats, and the Phillies escaped with a 2-1 win.
