The
Philadelphia Phillies took on the New York Mets on Tuesday afternoon in round 1 of an 18 round bout between NL East heavyweights. The first six innings saw both teams shadow boxing, the hardest punch being a home run by Mets firstbaseman Carlos Delgado in the second inning, the only mistake Phillies starter Jamie Moyer would make in six innings pitched. The only other run the Mets would get was off a ground out in the fourth to make the score 2-0 in favor of the enemy. The Phillies regrouped in the seventh inning and delivered a series of body shots that staggered the Mets and gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead. The Phillies continued with the body shots in the eighth to add on two more insurance runs that left the Mets dazed and confused. Tom Gordon came in to finish off the Mets in the nineth for his first save of the season, and start the last season at Shea Stadium on a sour note for Mets fans.
