After taking Round 7 Friday night against the Mets, the Phillies dropped rounds 8 and 9 on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s game saw the Phillies bullpen suffer a rare meltdown. Taking a 4-3 lead into the 8th inning, the bullpen gave up 6 runs over the next 2 innings in the Phillies 9-4 loss. This is either good news or bad news depending on your point of view, Tom Gordon was placed on the 15 day DL. Sunday’s game saw an old fashioned pitchers duel between Oliver Perez and Kyle Kendrick. The Mets took a 1-0 lead into the 9th inning and then added another run off of Brad Lidge to go up 2-0. Then in the bottom of the 9th Jayson Werth created his own fireworks by hitting a two-run game tying home run off of Mets’ closer Billy Wagner, it was a beautiful thing. Unfortunately the rains came and after a rain delay that lasted close to 3 hours, a name that hasn’t appeared on the baseball radar the last few years, Fernando Tatis, hit his own two-run homer in the top of the 12th to give the Mets a 4-2 win. The Phillies look to take round 10 and earn a split with the Mets in their four game series when Adam Eaton (3-6, 4.79) goes against Pedro Martinez (2-2, 7.39) on Monday night.
