The team to beat in the NL East, Philadelphia Phillies, got beat again on Tuesday night by the New York Mets by the score of 8-1. Their record now is 3-9, and in last place. Two things happened, one after the game that will be talked about the most, the other, the one that says the most about this team will probably be ignored.
The first one was Charlie Manuel challenging a local sports talk radio host, Howard Eskin to a fight. Eskin asked Manuel a legitimite question about the lack of emotion, and not getting angry enough with the team about the way they are playing. Manuel responded by telling Eskin that the players see him angry more than he thinks, and told Eskin to stop by his office and he would show him that he does get angry. It remains to be seen if this has any effect on when and if Manuel gets fired.
The second thing happened in the sixth inning. Apparently the Phillies players had to be waved off the field by the umpires, apparently they completely forgot that after you get 3 outs you leave the field. What’s amazing about this, it wasn’t just one or two guys, that happens from time to time, but it was all nine of them. There’s no excuse for that, you play baseball half your life, and you don’t know how many outs it takes to end an inning? Mistakes like that make you wonder why they even bother going to spring training. Then again this is the Phillies we’re talking about, and the way they are playing leaves alot to be desired.
